A Ranawiru wrist band and a miniature flag will be presented to President Mahinda Rajapaksa today at Temple Trees to mark the beginning of the War Heroes’ Month from May 07 to June 07.
Defence Ministry Additional Secretary Willie Gamage said it is important to respect the soldiers who sacrificed their lives or were disabled in their attempt to protect the country from terrorists for over 25 years. He said that many programmes including religious ceremonies will be held to commemorate the War Heroes’ Month.
The housing project for war heroes at Ipalogama in Kalawewa, Anuradhapura is estimated to cost around Rs. 900 million through funds from the Api Wenuwen Api programme as well as organisations and individual.
“Construction of around 1,500 houses is to be completed by end of this year. To collect more funds, the Defence Ministry has launched a programme by issuing 10 million rubber wrist bands. These wrist bands will be sold everywhere to collect funds for war heroes’ welfare”, Mr. Gamage added.
