Govt doctors call off tomorrow’s strike
The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) says it has decided to call off the strike action scheduled for tomorrow (Nov. 4), following assurances given by the government. The association on October 28 announced at a press conference that will stage a 24-hour isladnwide strike from 8am on Monday (November 4) over several demands.

Inspections to be conducted on Colombo hotels ahead of CHOGM
The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will conduct its second phase of inspections on hotels in the Colombo area in the next few days ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Chief Medical Officer of the CMC, Pradeep Kariyawasam stated that all the five-star hotels in Colombo were inspected under the primary phase while the CMC will also focus on other hotels in the area as well.

Sri Lanka’s MERS alert on KSA-bound flights
The Sri Lankan government is warning passengers heading to Saudi Arabia to take precautions against the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), which has infected 119 people and caused 51 deaths in the Kingdom. An official from the Colombo Ministry of Health told Arab News at Katunayake International Airport recently that the advisory was for all Middle East passengers.

Places preparing, selling food under scrutiny
The Ministry of Health has decided to inspect establishments selling, preparing food items and beverages in every city in the island. The ministry also says that it will inspect establishments selling and bottling drinking water in the country. The inspection will coincide with the Food Safety Week declared by the ministry from October 21 to 27 in view of World Food Day on October 16.

19 garment factory workers hospitalised for food poisoning
Police reported that 19 garment factory workers were hospitalised in the Medawachchiya area for food poisoning after consuming a meal provided to them by the company they work for. The workers had consumed a meal given to them for lunch following which they had been admitted to the Medawachchiya hospital.

Health Ministry lifts ban on 4 Indian firms
The Ministry of Health has decided to temporarily lift the ban imposed on purchasing of medicinal drugs from 4 Indian pharmaceutical companies, which have supplied substandard drugs to Sri Lanka. The Ministry of Health on September 15 announced that it has suspended importing 122 kinds of medicinal drugs from the companies: Laborate, Vivek, Bafna and Elysium Pharma with immediate effect.

‘Amaron’ and ‘Ceylon Water’ removed from market
The Health Ministry has decided to remove unregistered ‘Amaron’ and ‘Ceylon Water’ branded mineral water bottles from the market, the Ministry said in a statement. During a raid conducted by the Colombo Municipal health unit in Pettah large stocks of the aforementioned brands were seized.
