The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Board will come down hard on beach polluters with even court action contemplated against the offenders. Tourism Development Board research has revealed that most people consume alcohol on beaches and leave empty bottles and cellophane bags behind.

Environment Ministry to keep check on sand mining
The Ministry of Environment through the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has launched a special monitoring system in order to curtail illegal sand mining that possibly would rise after relaxing the laws imposed on sand transport.

Lanka need not worry about Kudankulam - AEC
Seeking to allay Sri Lankan fears on the Kudankulam nuclear plant in case of an accident, India today said there was no need to worry as it has high safety standards and a legal mechanism to take care of trans-boundary liability issues. “Sri Lanka has no reason to worry. The safety features of Kudankulam are of high standards, which have been cleared and verified by several independent groups,” Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Srikumar Banerjee said here.

Feeling warm? Blame it on humidity
The Meteorology Depart ment yesterday said that the warm temperature experienced these days was due to low winds and the low humidity in the atmosphere. Meteorology Department officials said there is no rise in the normal temperature but the direct fall of the sun’s rays had caused extreme warm conditions.

Holcim generates power from garbage material
For the first time agriculture waste is being used to generate power in the cement manufacturing processes by Holcim Lanka Limited. Chairman Holcim, Manilal Fernando speaking to Daily News Business at the launch of Holcim Lanka Ltd's new product, Holcim Extra at Water's Edge last Friday said that they are using, rice husks, straw, agri waste and other garbage material to generate power. 'This initiative has helped the company to reduce production cost by almost 30%,' he said.

Sri Lanka to participate in Earth Hour
The Environment Ministry has decided to add Sri Lanka's contribution to 'Earth Hour 2012' by switching off lights for one hour on March 31 from 8.30 pm to 9.30pm. The Earth Hour is a worldwide environmental event taking place each year since 2007 demanding that action be taken on climate change.

CEA designs clean air project
The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has designed an integrated air quality management project, "Blue Sky 2020", to ensure clean air for the next generation, CEA Chairman Charitha Herath told the Daily News yesterday. He said that the project would be launched by the end of this year. President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed the treasury to make a special financial allocation of Rs 120 million for the project.
