No truth about reports over internet: Closest full moon on March 19
Colombo University Senior Lecturer in Physics Dr Chandana Jayaratne yesterday said there was no truth in internet reports that the March 19 full moon will cause earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones and other extreme weather disasters.

'Minor Planet' to be named after IESL's JIY-2010 winner
Ceres Connection, a program of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Laboratory, is to name a 'Minor Planet' in honour of Ganidu Nanayakkara, the winner of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) Grand Award in Computer Engineering, in San Jose USA, last year. He was also the winner of the 'Junior Inventor of the Year-2010' (JIY-2010) competition, of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) and the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) 2010 competition.

Six eclipses this year, First eclipse today
There will be six eclipses this year; four partial solar eclipses and two total lunar eclipses. This 4:2 combination of solar and lunar eclipses in a single year is rather rare with only six cases during the 21st Century (2011, 2029, 2047,2065,2076 and 2094).

Total lunar eclipse today
The last eclipse for this year will be a total lunar eclipse. The eclipse begins today at 10.59 am Sri Lanka standard time. The eclipse occurs at 1.47 pm and ends at 4.35 pm. The eclipse will be visible in America, Greenland and Iceland, Western Europe, Eastern Asia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand day time.

Nano-technology park: UNESCO support sought
The Government has requested UNESCO support to construct a nano-technology park in Pitipana, Homagama. The Government has acquired the land and agreed to find the park partially, Scientific Affairs Senior Minister Prof Tissa Vitarana told the Daily News.
