New scheme to grant dual citizenship to Lankans
The government will establish a new scheme called the “Overseas Sri Lankans to formalize the granting of dual citizenship to Lankans who have terminated citizenship, the Government Information Department stated.

SF will be released unconditionally at the earliest - Anoma Fonseka
Sri Lanka’s president has promised to free jailed former army chief Sarath Fonseka unconditionally and at the earliest opportunity, the ex-general’s wife said Thursday. Anoma Fonseka said she met President Mahinda Rajapakse on Wednesday night and that he assured her that her husband would be freed as soon as possible.

Restrictions on transporting sand removed
The Cabinet has decided to allow the transportation of sand at any time by removing the earlier restriction limiting sand transportation to between 6am and 6pm, the Government Information Department stated. The Minister of Environment told Parliament last week that transporting sand without a permit would only allowed between 6am and 6pm effective from May 10.

Agencies alert over drug networks as demand doubles in SL
Enforcement agencies have sounded an alert on drug cartels using Kochi as a transit point for smuggling heroin to Sri Lanka, where the demand for the contraband has doubled in the past one year. Agencies have been asked to track carriers from West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar arriving in the city to hand over heroin consignments to agents, who in turn smuggle it to Sri Lanka.

Grenade hurled at Marawila magistrate’s residence fails to explode
Two unidentified persons on a motorcycle had hurled a hand grenade at the residence of the Marawila magistrate at Muhudukattuwa in Marawila this evening (May 16). However, the grenade had failed to explode thus averting any damages or injuries to persons, said police media spokesman SP Ajith Rohana.
