Sri Lanka expects US waiver after Iran oil import cut
Sri Lanka expects a U.S. waiver of sanctions on imports of Iranian crude after it took steps to cut them by up to 38 percent, switching to alternatives from Oman and Saudi Arabia, the island’s oil minister said. Susil Premajayantha said Sri Lanka, which is dependent on crude imports, has taken steps to reduce Iranian purchases to eight cargoes per year from 13, buying four cargoes from Oman and one from Saudi Aramco.

Strengthening maritime security vital - Indian don

Attention must be focused on strengthening Sri Lanka’s maritime security since it plays a vital role in the country’s safety and protection, Pondicherry University Associate Professor A Subramanyam Raju said. “Strengthening maritime security is a must since new threats are emerging from the sea. Such threats are more difficult to tackle than those emanating from land,” he said. Professor Raju said the ocean is rich with many resources.

Sri Lanka to release information on war detainees
The Sri Lankan government has decided to release the information on war detainees, a step seen as a response to the country’s reconciliation commission report. The Ministry of Defence on Sunday said that a decision has been made to release information on the detainees of the TID, saying the details will be revealed only to the close relatives.

Stock of military equipment found in Kilinochchi
A stock of ammunition and other military equipment was found in the Ratnampuram area in Kilinochchi by the police criminal investigation division following a raid. The stock was found in jungle area behind what used to be an LTTE library while police claimed that the equipment was used and stored there by the LTTE.

Another batch of 384 ex LTTE cadres to be integrated today
Three hundred and eighty four ex-LTTE cadres who had completed their term of rehabilitation will reintegrated to the society today. With the latest batch, 10,490 ex- LTTE combatants, including 2,170 females have been rehabilitated and reintegrated in to the society since the country was liberated from terrorism in May 2009, said Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Brigadier Dinesh Hettiarachchi.

LTTE attack caused Antonov crash in 2000 - police
The Antonov aircraft which crashed in the Weerawewa area in Anuradhapura on March 30, 2000 while transporting security personnel was the result of missile attack carried out by LTTE cadres, police revealed today.

SL Navy accused of attacking six Indian fishermen
A group of Tamil Nadu fishermen allege that Sri Lankan Naval personnel attacked six fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district, Indian media reports. The fishermen, who had put out to sea on March 20, claimed that they were attacked by the Sri Lankan naval personnel on March 23 while they were fishing in a mechanised boat about 35 nautical miles off-Kodiakarai coast, officials said.
