The number of motor vehicles registered in Sri Lanka during the first six months of this year has sharply increased compared to the corresponding period last year, according to Motor Traffic Department Statistics.

A total of 152,174 vehicles have been registered in the first six months of the year while the number for the corresponding period last year was 66,153.

Ending of the conflict and the return of peace in the North and East and the extension of leasing facilities by Banks and other financial institutions have been advanced as the main factors that contributed to the increase in the import of vehicles particularly motor-cycles and three wheelers. However, there has been a reduction in the import of motor cars in comparison to moor cycles during this period.
