Nature’s Secrets Chairman Samantha Kumarasinghe with Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga at the opening of the Nature’s Secrets Plant Research Centre.
The Nature’s Secrets Plant Research Centre and Tissue Culture Laboratory at Millewa Horana was opened by the Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga recently.
This is the first of its kind research centre related to plants for any private sector organization in the country. Nature’s Beauty Creations Limited is one of the largest herbal cosmetics manufacturers in Sri Lanka.
“We are committed to offering the end users efficacious product lines that exceed their expectations. We maintain one of the largest herbal plant gardens with nearly 400 medicinal plants in Horana. The research centre and laboratory will facilitate to further enhance the product offering,” Nature’s Secret’s Chairman Samantha Kumarasinghe said.
“We conduct continuous research to establish scientific data to validate the traditional application of medicinal plants. We are proud to be the first to set up a privately owned plant research centre in Sri Lanka with a substantial investment,” he said.
The research centre works with local as well as foreign research institutes. It will facilitate students from universities to carry out plant research projects at the fully equipped modern laboratory.
The MOUs signed with National Centre for Natural Product Research of University of Mississippi, USA and University of Florence, Italy to conduct collaborative plant research studies have brought recognition to the local research centre.
As a further step, the modern plant tissue culture laboratory will use advanced techniques to propagate and conserve rare, endemic and valuable medicinal plants in Sri Lanka.
“We are currently working on development of protocols for medicinal plants such as red sandalwood, venivel and kokum. We also plan to distribute these medicinal plants among different communities to grow in home gardens or on a commercial scale. Measures will be taken to support the growers of Sri Lankan banana varieties and micro propagation techniques will be used to improve the quality,” Kumarasinghe said.
