VIDEO: Govt. misleading the public as a distraction - Tissa

The government led protests yesterday against the UNHRC sessions were meaningless and just an attempt to mislead the public and distract them from the internal problems of the country, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake stated.

Speaking at a press conference held today (February 28) he stated that the government forcefully made government workers, Samurdhi workers and other parties with connections to the government get onto the streets in protest yesterday (February 27), in view of the UNHRC session in Geneva.

The government used funds to make government workers join the protest while some of the workers had confessed that they had been warned of consequences if they did not join in, he said.

Furthermore, he said that the basis of the protests was to mislead the public as many of the high ranking Ministers who joined the protest had expressed that the move against the government at the UNHRC session was a bid to put President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Army personnel to death by the electric-chair.

The government has been misleading the public right throughout this period while taking irrelevant shots at the UNP as well, Attanayake continued.

The three recommendations made to the government at the UNHRC session were to implement the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and launch an investigation regarding any human rights violations as part of the need for accountability, to present a road map for the further implementation of the LLRC recommendations at the next UNHRC session and to seek technical support and assistance from the UN Human Rights Commissioners office in the implementation of the previously mentioned recommendations.

Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe speaking at the UNHRC session last evening stated that the Sri Lankan government has implemented the recommendations already and therefore had no problems with the recommendations made by the council, Attanayake stated while adding that last evening’s protests in Sri Lanka were just the government’s effort to distract the public from the internal problems of the country including the increasing prices which recently sparked numerous protests in the country against the government.

MP Attanayake said that when the UNP organizes protests, the state media highlights it as a public nuisance while the government led protests are not portrayed as such even though roads had been blocked and the public were caused great inconvenience.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe stated in parliament recently that the UNP was happy with the LLRC report and encouraged the government to implement its recommendations while offering the UNP’s assistance if needed.

Attanayake stated that Minister Wimal Weerawansa had claimed that the US led move against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC session would lead to the President being executed on the electric chair while on the other hand Minister Samarasinghe has stated that the UNHRC recommendations have already been implemented.

“Who is the government trying to fool?” he added stating that no government official can be taken before a war tribunal as Sri Lanka is not signatory to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
