Phone booking for train commuters Mobitel-Railways partnership:
The Government has introduced a system to reserve train seats over Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel phones under the name 'Mobitel Ticketing' to provide an easy and comfortable train ride for commuters.
This facility over Mobitel phones will commence under the patronage of Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma at the Fort Railway station tomorrow. The Transport Ministry and the Sri Lanka Railways in collaboration with Telecom Mobitel will launch this service. There is a big public demand for train travel in the aftermath of the end of the war. "That is why, we decided to introduce the new system which is easier and quicker for the commuters," he said. Booking train seats through Mobitel phones offers a number of benefits over in-person booking. "Commuters can skip long lines at the station and can go straight to their trains," he said. Reservations can be made by dialing 365 from a Mobitel phone anytime of the day. The ticket fare will be redeemed through the phone bill of the Mobitel user. Reserved train tickets can be obtained at Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy and Peradeniya railway stations and any Mobitel outlet across the country. Commuters can make reservation for the seats of Colombo-Kandy intercity train initially. Sri Lanka Railways intends to introduce more trains with advanced booking facilities under its Value Added Service program. Sri Lanka Railways is also exploring the possibilities of entering into MoUs with other mobile phone service providers.
