COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- Heavy fighting has broken out between Tamil Tiger rebels and Sri Lanka's Navy in the seas off the northern Jaffna peninsula.
Sri Lankan soldiers patrol 210 kilometers (131 miles) north of the capital Colombo.
Navy officials reported a flotilla of more than 20 rebel boats attacked a navy vessel transporting more than 350 soldiers from the northeastern port city of Trincomalee.
There have been no immediate reports of casualties in Thursday's attack.
The navy has called in air support and initial reports indicate the navy lost a fast-attack patrol craft.
A cease-fire brokered by Norway in 2002 has broken down in recent weeks following rebel attacks and government reprisals against Tamil strongholds.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels have been seeking their own homeland in the north and east of the island nation which lies to the south of India.
More than 65,000 people on both sides have been killed since the Tamil Tigers began fighting in 1983 to create a separate state for Sri Lanka's 3.2 million Tamils, alleging discrimination by the country's 14 million Sinhalese.

If its Muslim terrorists?? they?ll call em terrorists send a army to destroy them , freeze there assets , even death penalty ??.. but bunch of thugs from vanni ?.who is categorize terrorists in UK ?.. BBC don?t have back bone to spit it out ?.

if LTTE go and Fu***ed some of thir palce then they will start calling terrorists. same like osama's war finaly bush forgot osama and went to iraq
international ORG's are suxs they only worry abt moeny and power they dont know how LTTE killing and what they do
