Two soldiers, one of the Sri Lanka Army and the other of the Civil Defence Force, were remanded till Oct.10, 2008 by Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ruchira Weliwatta and Additional Magistrate Shiwantha Manchanayaka on the charge of kidnapping and raping a 14 year old schoolgirl on the eve of the International Children’s Day.
The suspects were produced before two magistrates separately. A soldier of the Kurrkai army camp K.D. Priyantha Udawatta and a soldier of the Civil Defence Force attached to Thanthirimale police G. Ajith Somasiri of Indigaspothana, Thanthirimale are alleged to have kidnapped the schoolgirl and raped her in a room of a restaurant in Market Place, Anuradhapura. The Manager of the restaurant W.H.M. Padma Kumari of Elayapattuwa, Anuradhapura was released on certified bail of Rs.50,000 each by two sureties.
The victim was referred to JMO Anuradhapura Ajith Jayasena for a medical report. Inquiries revealed that the victim’s mother is employed abroad. OIC Hidagama police and Anuradhapura Child and Women Bureau initiated inquiries and arrested the suspects on a complaint of the girl’s father.

The civil authorities would have another problem in their hands dealing with some corrupt members of the Armed Forces who are now increasingly be seen to be committing rapes, murder and robbery, with the power of the fire arms with them in around the front line areas. This action has to be urgently curbed, although would be very difficult under the present circumstances. The bravery and valor of the majority of the Armed forces who are our heroes would be diminished if these rogue elements are not controlled or even weeded out by the Military Police and other relevant arms of the Forces themselves. We have seen repeated instances of such incidents and it does not portent good tidings for the near future.
