ARTICLE FROM THE DAILY MIRROR :
BJP wants Centre to intervene on Lankan issue
The Bharatiya Janatha Party (BJP) has demanded that Tamil Nadu State’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) seek the Centre's intervention in ensuring a political resolution to the ongoing ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, an Indian news agency reported yesterday.
State unit president L Ganesan told reporters that since the DMK was ruling Tamil Nadu, and was a part of the Congress-led UPA at the Centre, it should take up the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
"Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi or any of his representatives should meet the Prime Minister and demand for India's intervention in ensuring a political solution in Sri Lanka," Mr. Ganesan said.
He lauded various political parties in Tamil Nadu for standing united for the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils.
Mr. Ganesan warned New Delhi against helping Colombo with arms and combat expertise, claiming they were being used against innocent Tamils.
He demanded the retrieval of Katchatheevu, an islet ceded to Sri Lanka in 1974 by India and called for more protection for Indian fishermen who were allegedly being attacked by the Sri Lankan navy while fishing in the Palk Straits.
The BJP was organizing a "livelihood conference" for fishermen in Rameswaram today, Mr. Ganesan said. (PTI) I AM BRAINLESS, SO PLEASE EXCUSE ME !!!!!! |
