Fonseka discharged from hospital
DNA MP, Tiran Alles stated that Sarath Fonseka was discharged from the hospital a short while ago. Fonseka was receiving treatment at Nawaloka hospital for an illness related to his lungs. President Mahinda Rajapaksa signed the necessary papers for Sarath Fonseka’s release and had handed them over to the chief of Presidential staff on Saturday (May 18).

Woman dies after beating by husband
A 27-year-old woman in Mitiyagoda has died from injuries she sustained in a beating by her husband, following a heated argument over a family dispute. Police said the woman succumbed to injuries after being admitted to the Balapitiya Hospital. The husband has been arrested and is scheduled to be produced at the Balapitiya Magistrate’s Court today.

Don’t send Buddha’s relics to Sri Lanka: Vaiko
MDMK leader Vaiko on Saturday criticised India’s decision to lend ‘Kapilavastu relics’ (fragments of Buddha’s bones) to Sri Lanka for an exposition and said the move was an “unpardonable betrayal” of Indian Government against the Tamils. Vaiko, in a letter to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, said the decision was “pouring fire in the terribly wounded hearts of the Tamils”.

President signs Fonseka’s release papers
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has signed the necessary papers for Sarath Fonseka’s release and had handed them over to the chief of Presidential staff before leaving for Qatar last night, an official said. The President had signed the papers on May 18, Presidential spokesman Bandula Jayasekara told Ada Derana, adding, that the release papers are scheduled to be sent to the Ministry of Justice on Monday (21).

Fire destroys three shops in Kegalle
Three shops were engulfed in flames and completely destroyed after a fire broke out in the Dewalegama area in Kegalle. Police believe the fire, which is reported to have erupted at around 1.45 p.m. today (19), was caused by electricity leak.

A group of LTTE suspects at the Vavuniya remand prison have commenced a protest fast, demanding that they be released immediately as they have been detained for several years without any charges being filed. It is reported that 14 suspected LTTE cadres had initially launched the protest fast, which was later joined by around 30 more inmates. Prison officials have tightened security at the Vavuniya Prison with the launch of the protest fast.

Approach roads to Parliament closed
Approach roads to Parliament from Pelawatta, Kibulawala, Polduwa junctions will be closed from 3 p.m. today till end of the national war heroes’ commemoration, near the memorial situated at Parliament ground, Kotte. The Japan Friendship Road from Kibulawala, the road from Pelawatta, the road from Palam-thuna Junction and the road from Polduwa roundabout, leading up to parliament will be closed. Advising motorists traveling on these roads to use alternate roads, Police said that the roads will be reopened as soon as the war heroes’ memorial ends.

Unidentified body found in forest at Mahawa
An unidentified body of a male, believed to be around fifty-years-old, has been discovered at a forest area in Hinukwewa, Mahawa. A magisterial inquiry has been carried out by the Mahawa Magistrate on the body, which has currently been placed at the mortuary of the Kurunegala hospital. Mahawa Police is conducting the investigation.

Youth commits suicide on rail track at Dematagoda
A twenty-year-old youth had committed suicide today morning by placing his neck on the track near the last wheel of the final carriage of a train at the Dematagoda railway station, just as it started to move. The train, traveling from Colombo Fort to Kelaniya, had stopped at the Dematagoda station and was just about to take off when the youth had committed suicide. The body of the deceased, a resident of Aramaya Place in Dematagoda, has been placed at the mortuary of Colombo National Hospital while Dematagoda Police conduct investigations.
