Suspect surrenders over Mirihana weapons haul

The alleged owner of a large haul of weapons, discovered hidden inside a residence in Mirihana, has surrendered to court.

Mirihana Police, acting on information received, carried out a search at the residence on Old Kesbewa Road on Saturday (9) and found the weapons hidden inside a room on the 2nd floor.    

Police said 16 air rifles, 56 toy guns, 242 swords (2 and ½ feet long), 42 long daggers, 53 small daggers, 60 knives, 11 mobile phones and 19 cans of air rifle ammunition were found inside the house.

The owner of the house had been evading arrest, however had surrendered to the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court yesterday (11) through an attorney.

The suspect has claimed that he possesses permits for the weapons seized from his house, the Police Spokesman’s Office said.

Therefore the Magistrate has instructed the police to look into the matter and submit a report to the court.
