Matara-Beliatta railway project starts today
Construction work on the first phase of the proposed Matara-Kataragama new rail-road from Matara to Beliatta will be inaugurated at 3pm today. The Director attached to Matara-Kataragama New Rail-Road Construction Project Mr. V. Amaratunga said that the construction work will start today from Beliatta and it is expected to be completed by 2015.

Colombo-Katunayaka expressway makes Rs.3mil in earnings
The Road Development Authority reported earnings of Rs.3 million from 6pm yesterday (October 27) to 7am today (28) from the Colombo-Katunayaka expressway. Over 11,000 vehicles used the expressway which was declared open yesterday by the President.

Sri Lanka to ink agreement with India on 500 MW power project
Resolving all the outstanding issues, India and Sri Lanka will on Monday ink an agreement for the execution of the 500 MW thermal power project at Sampur in Trincomalee at a cost of Rs. 4,000 crore. State-run NTPC and Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) had signed an agreement in 2011 to set up a coal-based power project which had got delayed due to various reasons. About two years after the agreement was signed, the initiative — NTPC’s first overseas coal-fired power project — saw little progress due to various disagreements between the two partners.

Queen Victoria statue to be given a facelift in Colombo
A statue of Queen Victoria in Sri Lanka’s main city, Colombo, has been taken off its plinth for renovation ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held there next month. The statue was moved from its original location seven years ago and placed in an inconspicuous position.

The Yal Devi train resumed operations after 23 years from Omanthai to Kilinochchi a short while ago with President Mahinda Rajapaksa as its first Passenger. The Yal Devi which travelled only up to Madawachchiya after 1990, was restricted to Vavuniya, during the final stages of the war.

PowerGrid seeks ‘viable return’ for India-Lanka undersea link
PowerGrid Corporation of India is seeking a “viable return” for a proposed undersea transmission cable linking India and Sri Lanka, which has been delayed. The project, with a capacity to transmit 500 MW of electricity, is to be jointly implemented with the Ceylon Electricity Board at an estimated cost of INR 2,500-3,000 crore and was scheduled to be completed this year.

Chunnakam substation to be commissioned next month
The newly built Chunnakam Sub Station, for supplying power to Jaffna, will be vested in the people in September thereby fulfilling the electricity requirement in the peninsula, the Ministry of Power and Energy said. The station, constructed at a cost of Rs 1,800 million, will generate 63 megawatts to power over 120,000 houses.
